The Alphabet of Care

Medicare doesn't have to be confusing. Here is your quick, no-nonsense guide to what each part actually does—without the government jargon.

A

Part A

Hospital

Think of this as your room and board. It covers inpatient hospital care, skilled nursing facilities, and hospice care.

Pro-tip: Most people get this premium-free if they have 10+ years of work history.

B

Part B

Doctor

Your day-to-day medical care. It covers outpatient visits, preventive services, lab tests, and medical equipment.

Pro-tip: This is the part that typically carries a standard monthly premium.

C

Part C

Advantage

The all-in-one alternative. Private plans that bundle A, B, and usually D, often adding extra perks like dental and vision.

Pro-tip: Operates like an HMO/PPO, meaning you'll generally need to use network providers.

D

Part D

Prescription

Your pharmacy card. Standalone plans that help cover the cost of your medications, both generic and brand-name.

Pro-tip: Even if you don't take meds now, sign up to avoid late enrollment penalties.

MEDICARE BASE COSTS

Clear Costs,
Zero Surprises

Part A

Hospital Insurance

Monthly Premium

$0

For most beneficiaries with 40+ work quarters.

Deductible

$1,736

Per benefit period (not annual).

Part B

Doctor & Outpatient

Monthly Premium

$202.90

Standard base rate.

Deductible

$283

PRO-TIP: IRMAA

If your income is above a certain limit, you may pay an Income Related Monthly Adjustment Amount (IRMAA). This is a higher-earner adjustment added to your Part B and Part D premiums, based on your tax return from two years prior.
